I found that Malcolm X’s and Franklin’s essays were very
similar in the way that both of them had a tremendous amount of self-drive and motivation
to expand their word base and knowledge. They both had an incredible yearning
for knowledge and education. Both of them more or less self –taught themselves
through books they were had fairly easy access too. Both of them practiced what
they learned via copying and writing it down in their own penmanship and words for
later study and correction. Both also had fairly large obstacles and struggle’s
to work through both publically, as they became well known and in their
personal lives.
How they differed was Franklin had his father to sort of
guide him along. His father also had the ability to expose Franklin to many
different avenues of learning, doing apprenticeships, studying at schools, and
also studying alongside distant and close by relatives. Malcolm X did not talk of having any sort of
guidance, because he didn’t really. He did not have family or friends to help
introduce him to different avenues of knowledge, styles of learning or to offer
guidance and direction. He only had himself and his willingness to accomplish
what he did on his own. They also
obviously differed in time period.
Yes, interesting comments on the large obstacles and struggles, and the support or lack thereof that they had, in overcoming them!
